Nature in the raw. I watched an eagle "swim" in a video a couple of years a=
go, it was almost unbelievable. I sometimes wonder that anything survives t=
he eagle, but I suppose when there is something to scavenge they don't have=
to work for their food and kill something. They strike me as kind of lazy,=
but also practical and opportunistic. Perhaps like a lion, king of beasts =
(who often lets the lioness kill the prey).Yes, I would say it was hungry!

Subject: [NatureNS] Bald Eagle 1, Cormorant 0=C2=A0Early this afternoon I w=
as scanning the shoreline at Eagle Head Beach in Queen's County. From besid=
e me an adult Bald Eagle chased a large dark bird out onto the water, forci=
ng it down behind a rocky islet. For two or three minutes nothing happened,=
then the eagle emerged, dragging a still struggling cormorant - but swimmi=
ng, not flying, with such a big bird. It was about 150m to shore, and the e=
agle flapped on through the water for several minutes, using the avian equi=
valent of the breast-stroke, until it was able to emerge on a rock with the=
now very dead cormorant, and begin to tear it apart.=C2=A0I concluded that=
this was one very hungry eagle - all that effort, swimming no less - for=
=C2=A0 a meal as appetizing as a cormorant.=C2=A0Eric L. MillsLower Rose Ba=
