The regular monthly meeting of the Blomidon Naturalists Society will take p=
lace on Monday, April 17 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm in Room BAC241 of the Beveridg=
e Arts Centre, Acadia University, Wolfville.

The meeting is open to the public.

The main presentation will be:

What=92s Happening to Nova Scotia Forests? by Bob Bancroft

In the 25 years leading up to 2014, 42 percent of the operable forests in N=
ova Scotia have been clear-cut. Clear-cuts are the quickest way for compani=
es to make short-term profits. Clear-cutting results in long-term degradati=
on of forest soils and waterways, and in diminishing prospects for regenera=
ting forests. Wildlife populations and nature are rapidly deteriorating as =
these forests are flattened. For decades the forest industry, with governme=
nt assistance and the public purse, has been converting complex Acadian for=
ests to boreal-style, simplified forests for fibre production. No valid sc=
ientific rationale for doing this exists. Corporate greed is involved. Succ=
essive provincial governments of all political stripes have failed to manag=
e public lands in the public interest. Harvests are now recurring in 20=965=
5 year cycles, whereas many Acadian Forest trees can live for centuries.

There will be ample discussion time.

As the regional biologist in eastern Nova Scotia, Bob Bancroft realized tha=
t forest =93managers=94 and single-minded harvesters were rapidly altering =
forest habitats to the detriment of nature and many wildlife species. He se=
rved as an extension (education) biologist, editor, and fisheries biologist=
before leaving the provincial civil service in 1999. He led a scientific p=
anel in 2009/2010 that was asked by government to make recommendations for =
a new forest strategy. Currently the president of Nature Nova Scotia, Bob o=
perates a wildlife/forestry consulting business, writes for magazines like =
Saltscapes, and continues with his CBC and news radio wildlife commentaries=
. Bob lives with his wife, landscape artist Alice Reed, on 56 acres of form=
er farmland beside Pomquet Harbour, where he has been restoring a healthy f=
orest for 42 years.
