Things are a bit quieter these last couple days. Many of the hoards of
Goldfinches have moved out as have the Mourning Doves and the Nuthatches. I
haven't seen the Cardinal and no longer hear him so maybe he has found a
female and moved off with her. Chickadees, a few juncos, Starlings and way
too many Grackles have stayed. More Grackles every day. Robins have been
moving out.. We have a number of pairs of Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers as
well as a Northern Flicker.
From the window I am seeing a stream of 5 or six gull, every few minutes or
so, (kinds) various moving toward the west. I don't think they are repeats.
Sparrows are still here: Song White Throats and various others. I was
surprised by a bird flying up and away and when it settled in the tree, it
was an Eastern Towhee. No photos as there was an egg hunt going on next door
and that probably was the reason for the quick get away.
I've been pleased to say we have a pair of Tree swallows in one house and
someone checking out one of the others. I haven't seen any hunting at the
Meadow Pond but I'm hearing others are seeing a few so hopefully there will
be a successful season.
I was chatting with a family member at dinner Friday and he has seen a
couple bats and several other of the fishermen say they have as well. Which
bats? I don't know so I can't report them. I hope we will have visits here.
There are a few small moths here this evening. There is a peeper chorus
accented by the deep growls of the frogs in the swamp. Heavens it is so
nice to hear all this!! Made it through another winter.
Hummingbird feeders are out.
Snowdrops are drying off, the croci are displaying lovely colours and there
is coltsfoot blooming by the foundation.
Chipmunks are feeding here most of the time, three I think now, and several
squirrels. A biggish square vole (?) moves through a well worn trail still.
The Kiwi is budding up and the maples are blooming. The scent from the
Alders perfumed the fog this am.
