In all three of the routes that I run owls were down and none were present =
in the guranteed spots from years prior. I to ran my last route last night=
. On the basis of the weather forecast and my work schedule, I was scared =
that I might not get it done in time. It was a perfect evening for the Mid=
dlewood to Vogler's Cove and out to East Port Medway route. It was a very =
bright night. Last year we had owls on seven out of ten stops. This year =
only four owls in four out of ten stops. Curiously three out of the four o=
wls were vocal only during the boreal owl calls. No sounds heard after the=
barred owl. The forth owl was seen but not heard. It remained silent thr=
oughout.

Hi Randy;
Jeannie Shermerhorn and myself ran one of my routes last night...as you sai=
d it seemed like a perfect night. We had 10 Barred Owls, including three a=
t one stop, two of which sounded like the tape...arguing? This was the rout=
e we've had over 20 Owls in the past, including GH and SawWhet, and several=
of the "sure" stops didn't produce. Go figure.

The route passes my home, and I do hear Barred Owls from the yard...twice l=

I checked with Bernard Forsythe to see how his owl nesting activities are p=

I have a route to do, and should have completed it last night, if not for a=

Last night I ran my Nocturnal Owl Survey (http://www.birdscanada.org/volunt=
eer/atowls/) under ideal conditions (low-no wind, very bright half moon, ve=
ry little run-off noise) with a student, Danny MacDonald who had not yet se=
en an owl in the wild. We had grouse, snipe, woodcock, porcupine and a not =
so distant pack of coyotes, but not a single owl.
Oh well, as I tell my students, "zeroes are data, too."
