Hi All,
The arrival of the first of this years Tree Swallows and the last good w=
eather for the foreseeable future motivated me to clean-out and repair my s=
wallow boxes. Last season I prepared 30 boxes in the fields near my house. =
It was at best an average year but better than I had expected given the lac=
k of swallows observed in the area last year.
Of the 30 boxes 15 contained completed nests - 13 with breeding evidenc=
e and 2 with red squirrel nests on top of a swallow nests. One box contain=
ed a partial swallow nest . Fourteen boxes contain no evidence of swallow n=
esting activity. Of these 3 had completed Red Squirrel nests and 3 had part=
ial Red Squirrel nests. The only interesting note was that one of the compl=
eted Red Squirrel nests contained a good handful of rose hips. I've never f=
ound that fruit in a squirrel nest before although I expect it's a good win=
ter source of food.
I've decided to move a number of my less active boxes to better locati=
ons as much of the habitat near my house is converting from open fields to =
young forest. Many of the empty boxes last season seemed related to the lo=
ss of habitat. All the best.
