We have a couple of enthusiastically singing purple finches as well. After
having only one male around here last winter, I looked out and saw three
males and a few females all at the feeder a few days ago.

The sugar maple has been blooming for a few days and is abuzz with bees, a
few species, which I am too busy and inexperienced to attempt to ID.

Last night I went to show my nephew (age 7) the spring peeper phenomenon.
After trying to get him acquainted with catching night crawlers, we made our
way to the pond. A warm rainy/misty night 18 degrees... who could ask for
better frog weather. The peeper chorus has been nearly deafening when I
visit them up close at the pond edges next to my house in the valley. I've
had to shout to those who tag along. It's incredible. To my surprise, the
pond in East Dalhousie featured only a sparse chorus of peepers. I could
discern only about 6-10 peepers. This is certainly not like I remembered it
years ago. The pond contained many masses of wood frog and salamander eggs.
I am wondering if it's time to dump in some limestone fragments.

The drive home found me straining my eyes to go around frogs and linear
outlines that might have been salamanders. I'm not sure if it makes a
difference, but I'd like to think so. Traffic was sparse.

At the top of a spruce tree at our place on Wyman Road. Colour wasn't
obvious, but the song sure was, and checked out, as did the shape.

Hope he finds a mate.
