I am wondering if anyone has tried this and has any helpful advice. I have clipped off a bunch of small (~5mm diameter) red maple suckers coming up from the base of a tree. Right now they are in a bucket of water. Should I poKe them in the ground as is or allow them to sprout roots first?

I am trying to fill a bare area where red maples had been before it had to be dug up.
