July 28/17 White Point, Queens

This am the last two chicks in the Grapevine House fledged. That makes a
total of five. There was one that flew a couple days ahead of the others
then one a day until today when there were the two. It is so quiet now. I
will miss them. One pair nested, possibly over another nest, Steve will take
the house down and clean it this evening likely, so he can put his Canadian
flag up for July 1st.
We appear to have one young hummingbird out now. There were three females on
the studio feeder this am and two males squabble from time to time.
Downy Woodpeckers are out, tiny Nuthatches were lined up in the maple tree,
young Robins, Northern Flickers and Grackles.... well the grackle numbers
have dropped drastically, thankfully. There is one pair coming once in
awhile to the feeders but the hoards are gone! Yeah! Red winged blackbirds
are also fewer although I am pretty sure there are two nests at least in the
swamp.
Mourning Doves numbers are dropping as well. Crows and Ravens did a number
on the grackles and robins. I know everyone has to eat.
I found an egg shell in the driveway. A lovely pale blue with a brown or
muddy purpley splotches on it. It is quite a bit larger than a robin's egg
at least twice the size. I must see if I can find out who might have
produced it. I don't believe I have seen it before.

Golden Crowned kinglets are visiting and oh! Purple finches have their young
out now. There are others, including chickadees, the catbird, that I am not
sure if the nests were raided or washed out or what is happening.

There is one bird sound. It is driving me foolish. Just when I find the bird
with my glasses, smallish, it moves. It is a burbled buzz, slowly rises a
bit then drops a bit just before it finishes. Kind of harsh. Loud and
travels a long way. There are no replies as far as I can tell. The bird goes
around and around the house and neighbourhood and I know I should know what
it is but I can't remember. I have spent several evenings listening to
sounds on allaboutbirds to no avail. Agh!! I did hear it though. In
allaboutbirds on the chipping sparrow song it is in the background. I still
don't know what it is though.

Must get back to the studio. Lighthouse art show and sale is in mid August
this year in Port Medway and fresh pieces, sizes various, need to be ready
to go there. I want to paint at Ragged Harbour but those chicks ( Willet and
Killdeers) need to get off so I can get where I want to go.
I can hear a frog in the swamp today and we have had a number of butterflies
including another Monarch sighting. My milkweed is not expanding much so I
need to plant more out and about.
