I did a shorebird survey at Morien Bar on Saturday, July 22. This is traditionally the week that Willet numbers peak there, as both female (which leave first) and male adults have now left their young, for the most part. Some late nesters, newly-formed pairs that spent 6 weeks or more on courtship before nesting, are still guarding downy young at this point, but these are in fairly small numbers. Numbers of other shorebird species are still building.Conditions at Morien Bar were very windy on Saturday, particularly in the afternoon, so peeps and Semipalmated Plovers kept to the grass, and even Lesser Yellowlegs hung around cover and were often missed in the count. The following shorebirds were seen, however:Black-bellied Plover 2Semipalmated Plover 7Greater Yellowlegs 143Willet 132Whimbrel 1Red Knot 3Ruddy Turnstone 3Semipalmated Sandpiper 30Short-billed Dowitcher 105Cheers,Susann Myers
