Hi all,

This morning I received a request to complete a survey about birdwatching
from the University of Alberta and was informed that I was chosen due to my
participation in eBird.

While in retrospect, there are some indications in the introductory email,
it became more obvious as the survey proceeded that there are hunting
interests behind the survey methodology and objectives. If true, this should
be stated upfront in the ethics statement in the introductory email. I don't
doubt the validity of the conservation goals of the survey but I wish to
send out a word of caution to the members of this list.

The survey also refers to a number of specific conservation organizations
like Bird Studies Canada which might imply, correctly or falsely, that they
support the objectives of the survey.

I would also like to know how my participation in eBird gets me on the
sampling list for a university questionnaire. Is eBird selling or
distributing names and email address of participants?

John
