I received the survey as well. I did not open it or do anything yet as I w=
as unsure if it was a phishing scam or if it was legitimate.

Hi all,
This morning I received a request to complete a survey about birdwatching f=
rom the University of Alberta and was informed that I was chosen due to my =
participation in eBird.
While in retrospect, there are some indications in the introductory email, =
it became more obvious as the survey proceeded that there are hunting inter=
ests behind the survey methodology and objectives. If true, this should be =
stated upfront in the ethics statement in the introductory email. I don=92t=
doubt the validity of the conservation goals of the survey but I wish to s=
end out a word of caution to the members of this list.
The survey also refers to a number of specific conservation organizations l=
ike Bird Studies Canada which might imply, correctly or falsely, that they =
support the objectives of the survey.
I would also like to know how my participation in eBird gets me on the samp=
ling list for a university questionnaire. Is eBird selling or distributing =
names and email address of participants?
