Fishing about a mile or so off Peggy's Cove this morning we noticed a
large disturbance further out to sea with lots of birds. The action slowly
moved toward us until we were surrounded by about 30 dolphins including some
juveniles, all in a feeding frenzy, presumably after mackerel which were all
over. In their feeding they passed just a few feet from the boat and were
accompanied by between 50 and 60 gannets, constantly diving. After a few
minutes the action moved on.
I believe they were Atlantic White side dolphins. An amazing experience.
Got some nice cod and threw back dozens of small pollock so they are
apparently flourishing. No great white but a few seals.
