Hi John and all:

Thank you. Is the whistle call of the Swaison's similar to that of the her=
mit thrush. I listened to a sound clip sent by Ken McKenna, which sounded =
identical to the calls I was hearing. These whistled appeared to be from b=
irds already on the ground and birds in the sky, that I'm assuming dropped =
down into the woods behind the house.

Sincerely,

James

Hi Nancy, James, and all,

These are interesting observations. We are in the midst of the peak migrati=
on of Swainson=92s Thrushes right now. Their night flight call is almost id=
entical to a Spring Peeper. Since Swainson=92s Thrush migrate quite high, w=
e generally hear them just as they are gaining altitude or coming down. The=
spectrogram of the Spring Peeper and Swainson=92s Thrush are almost identi=
cal as well except that the Swainson=92s Thrush call has some modulation wh=
ich gives it more of a spooky quality.

James may be hearing some combination of Swainson=92s Thrushes calls: the p=
eeper-like flight call, and the two ground calls, one is a low =93whit=94 o=
r a =93whit-burr=94, the other is a high descending =93seer=94 note.

John

Lots of isolated Peepers calling here at night. I often think they are bird=
s before clueing in.

It is now 23:40 as I write this. I was just outside in the yard and could =
hear a weeert type of noise. Something like the diving of a bird maybe. T=
his was followed by a whistle type noise from a bird. Off to the right the=
re was a corresponding whistle type call. I would hear the diving noise ag=
ain and then a whistle type call and a responding call from further away. =
There then would be a response from a third bird. This sequence of events =
kept occuring with sometimes the whistle sounding far away and other times =
very close to me. Do common nighthawks have a whistle type bird call? I've=
heard their call, but this is the only thing I can think of that might be =
making this type of noise. I know the penting call of the American woodcoc=
k so it defintely was not that. I'm baffled as this is the first time I've=
heard this on the basis of all of the night calls that I've listened to in=
 respects to birds.
