Hello All,
Just to add a further wrinkle I notice that there is an outbreak of=20
Spruce Budworm in Quebec. And unlike most insects, which 'kill' very=20
weak or dying trees the Budworm can kill even the most vigorous Fir or=20
Spruce. Fear of this getting out of hand, and driving the brow value of=20
stud wood below harvesting costs may be a factor driving high harvest=20
rates.
If some company, using their funds not public funds, wants to gamble=
=20
and bet their future on Spruce then I have no problem with their using=20
glyphosate to depress growth of hardwoods. But otherwise I think a mixed=20
forest is the better policy in this period of rapid climate change.=20
Spruce in the Kentville area is in poor shape. And air pollution from=20
our friends to the SW is going to get worse until the rush to coal is=20
reversed and when it has reversed air pollution will still be serious.=20
That coupled with unusually fickle weather with a warming trend will=20
limit Spruce to swampy land of low and slow growth within normal span of=20
a good Spruce. Spruce will continue to cope where there is ample rooting=20
depth in soil of good water holding capacity but this is usually used to=20
grow food or housing developments.
Setting such speculation aside I think some ground truth would be of=
=20
great value; such as forest cover and tree growth on typical 5, 10 15=20
and 20 year-old clearcuts. Perhaps some objective journalist could dig=20
into this.
