This may interest some NatureNS members. The venue is Dalhousie Univ., up =
the elevator in the Biology Dept, located in the giant concrete Life Scienc=
es Ctr, just off Oxford Street in Halifax.
You can usually find a space to park on the east side of Oxford St at that =
hour, especially on a Friday, though traffic on Oxford will be heavy at 3:3=
0.

Please join us Friday, Nov. 17th for the weekly FISH talk (3:30 =96 4:30p=
m in the 5th floor lounge), followed by BioBeer (4:30 =96 5:30pm)!

FISH talk: USING CITIZEN SCIENCE DATA, STABLE ISOTOPES, CORTICOSTERONE AND =
TELOMERES TO UNDERSTAND SWALLOW POPULATION DECLINES

By: Tara Imlay, PhD Candidate, Leonard Lab.

Summary:
Swallows and other aerial insectivores (birds that feed in flight on flying=
insects) are experiencing severe and widespread population declines across=
North America. My research uses long-term citizen science data, stable is=
otopes, corticosterone and telomeres to understand what may drive populatio=
n declines throughout the annual cycle of four species of swallows that bre=
ed in the Maritimes and winter in southern South America.
