Hello All,
I don't know about the other provinces but in NS the worst thing=20
which can happen to a landowner, quietly enjoying ownership as promised=20
in the deed, is to have minerals or other underground resources=20
discovered on the property. You may be given compensation below market=20
value and forced to vacate even if the resource is on an adjacent=20
property and your land offers the best access route. There is a legal=20
term for this but in essence economic opportunity trumps individual=20
property rights. So it comes as no surprise that the same would apply to=20
protected areas; especially when the government is swimming in a sea of=20
red ink.
By the way the province of Nova Scotia, over some decades, has=20
become NoWay Scotia. Every proposed project, such as extraction and sale=20
of North Mountain Basalt, quickly generates enough protests to scuttle=20
it. So "honey, I shrunk the rural economy" is by some considered an=20
achievement. But as more rural people become economic refugees and have=20
to sell land for job hunt money the message may sink in too late that=20
"what goes around comes around".
I expect few on naturens will agree but I think this entire edifice=20
of protected areas, biological diversity and endangered species is=20
largely ineffective window dressing and has been pushed by those who=20
have a very poor comprehension of logic, reason, reality and biology.
It is fun to find rare plants and animals but pity the poor species=20
which depend upon rare plants or animals for a living. Biological=20
diversity need not equal a long list of residents but hinges upon some=20
food or substrate being available when needed year round (which may=20
imply [gasp] being grateful for introduced species) . Protected areas=20
are useless if the air is too polluted, or if they are surrounded by=20
hostile conditions etc. Amphibia and reptiles need well located=20
underpasses so they can travel as instinct urges and they need good=20
runoff management so waterways don't oscillate between flood and=20
dribble. Porous pavement has been around about 50 years but barely used=20
here.
Over recent decades there has been a craze to collect 'yard waste'=20
and 'kitchen waste' for composting indoors, doggy do for burial in=20
landfills etc. A token 12% of protected areas can not overcome silly=20
management on the remaining 88% and so on and so on.
Encourage by example wise use of all land and water resources and it=
=20
will be clear that pristine wilderness protected areas with the=20
obligatory 33' wide graded 'paths' for public access, serve no useful=20
purpose.
And flick that 'look but don't touch' approach to natural history=20
from the frying pan into the fire, where it belongs. Has no one noticed=20
that many giants of conservation such as Muir, Wilson, Peterson and=20
Leopold all collected in their youth ?
Brues, Melander and Carpenter (Classification of Insects) nailed it=20
in the preface to their first edition; "...nor can any comprehension of=20
the infinite variety of nature be acquired except by close observational=20
contact with the things themselves."
