John and others,
I haven't been checking Nature NS recently, so didn't see this post. John, =
can you let me know if you see the thrush again.
Lane & Jaramillo (2000) propose that the ratio of the length of the primary=
extension beyond the tertials to the length of the exposed tertials might =
be the best way to compare the wing length of both species. They found that=
in Bicknell's, this ratio is 1:1 or less while in Gray-cheeked, it is 1:1 =
or greater. High quality photos of the folded primaries would also help dis=
tinguish between the two species (Bicknell's/Gray-cheeked), see my blog:

hrushes; Part III: Gray-cheeked and Bicknell=92s thrushes. Birding 32(4): 3=
18-331.

One of the subspecies of Gray-cheeked, that breeds in Newf&Labrador can als=
o show a reddish tail. The visual distinctions between those and Bicknell=
=92s are so fine I doubt even a photo would be of much help. Some guides sa=
y they are only reliably identified by DNA and song.
Either way it is a great signing.

(2) Well, the thrush just returned to the same bush. I didn=92t get an =

Makes me suspect a Bicknell=92s. Strongly.
Don=92t think it=92s a hermit; colouring didn=92t look right and it didn=92=

(3) On the way into town about 12:45, as I was approaching the golf cour=
