Unless a straggler pops up, this is the final update to the 2017/18 Blake M=
aybank Winter Bird List and Depth of Winter List.
I would like to extend much appreciation and thanks to Peter Brannon for ta=
king time away from trudging the marshes of Florida looking for birds and p=
hoto opportunities to keep the NS Bird Society website updated, including t=
he near daily updates for the WBL and DoWL lists. Do yourself a favour book=

I also want to thank Nancy Dowd for sending me the Facebook sightings.
The WBL finished at 204, which ties our 3rd highest and is 8 beyond our ave=
rage total.
We picked up two more for the DoWL to bring us to 147, 8 fewer than our rec=
ord DoWL last year and 1 less than our average.

Here our are biggest misses on the WBL:
Ruddy Duck =96 I have winter bird records for the last 22 years and this ye=
ar is our first miss in that span
American Bittern =96 8 out of the previous 9 years
Eastern Meadowlark =96 After a 20 straight years, we=92ve missed this one t=
wice in the last 3 years.
Here are our biggest missed on the DoWL:
Baltimore Oriole (9 out of 10)
Dickcissel (8 out of 10)
Ruddy Turnstone (7 out of 10)
The Winter Bird List (WBL) counts species from December, January and Februa=
ry and are noted by a =93X=94 in the column on the spreadsheet.
The Depth of Winter List (DoWL) counts species from February only and are n=
oted with =93*X*=94.
NatureNS does not allow me to link to our winter bird page directly but you=
can find it following the directions at the link below where you can view =
and/or download the WBL spreadsheet. The downloaded version contains more y=
ears of data.
