There’s lots of info on the Internet about cell-phone compasses.

The compass hardware in smart phones is a kind of magnetometer, detecting the Earth’s magnetic field. They are notorious for unreliable readings. An “app” is required to display the output of the magnetometer on the screen, but the app just displays what the hardware tells it, so the cheapest one will work just as well as the most expensive.

Smartphone compasses do not depend upon the cellular system; you don’t need a cell connection to use them. But you’d probably be better off with a cheap old-fashioned  compass.
