Old fashioned yes, but 'best to get one for which you can reset the north r=
eading to correct for magnetic declination which is substantial (-17=C2=B0 =
18' for Halifax)

 Hi, Randy-

There=E2=80=99s lots of info on the Internet about cell-phone compasses.

The compass hardware in smart phones is a kind of magnetometer, detecting t=
he Earth=E2=80=99s magnetic field. They are notorious for unreliable readin=
gs. An =E2=80=9Capp=E2=80=9D is required to display the output of the magne=
tometer on the screen, but the app just displays what the hardware tells it=
, so the cheapest one will work just as well as the most expensive.

Smartphone compasses do not depend upon the cellular system; you don=E2=80=
=99t need a cell connection to use them. But you=E2=80=99d probably be bett=
er off with a cheap old-fashioned=C2=A0 compass.
