about cell-phone compasses.

          <br clear=3D"none"/>The compass hardware in smart phones is a kin=
d of magnetometer, detecting the Earth=E2=80=99s magnetic field. They are n=
otorious for unreliable readings. An =E2=80=9Capp=E2=80=9D is required to d=
isplay the output of the magnetometer on the screen, but the app just displ=
ays what the hardware tells it, so the cheapest one will work just as well =
as the most expensive.
