That may explain their current relative abundance chez moi, but I do wonder
where the Barreds have gone. (Maybe up to Carleton!)

A propos, I livein hope that Bill Lahey will recommend a recommendation at
our current rate of forest harvesting!

I'm not sure John. I don't spend a whole lot of time inland, especially
after dark. I typically find Great Horned Owls around coastal and island
spruce/fir forests. We did have two on the Welshtown owl route in Apr 2017.

Alix,

Do you have a possible explanation for the lack of Great Horned Owls? The
last atlas shows them declining in western Nova Scotia.

John

Paul Gould and I completed a new owl route last night. It is along the Spar
Ridge Rd in Yarmouth County. This is a 22 km road that goes around a few
large lakes. The southern portion has more large spruces and pines and the
northern section has mostly deciduous trees. There is no cell service for
the most part and there are no houses and very few camps.

We had 15 Barred Owls during the survey and another three at a random stop
once the survey was done. Some of the Barred came in and started vocalizing
near us, so I was able to get a recording that I'll post to eBird soon.
There was one Northern Saw-Whet in the deciduous portion of the route. We
heard gulls (Herring or Great Black-backed) at two stops near Big Gull and
Spar Lakes. I'd like to visit those lakes to confirm breeding and numbers.
We also had a few Common Loons, Spring Peepers, what sounded like another
frog species and a few meteors. There were no clouds so the temperature
dropped from 1 degree at the start of the survey to minus 4 at the end.
