MAY 9, 2018 - Sunset time at Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville, I did a vigil for early chimney swifts. Sunset time in Chronicle Herald was 8:28 p.m. Sky was clear all day long, and still mostly clear of clouds at sunset. Temperature was 16 C. with a weak cool breeze from the northwest.

I arrived at RTNC at 8:23. At 8:30 one chimney swift flew over the chimney. No other action until 8:39, when about 10 swifts flew overhead in a flock. Then nothing until 8:55 p.m., by which time I had moved my chair close to the chimney. One swift dropped into the chimney, followed by another single, shortly followed by about 10 more followed quickly by about 10 more swifts, all dropping into the chimney. I did not hear any calling from the swifts, but then my deafness is legendary!

Thus I had a total of about 22 chimney swifts for the evening. I departed at 9:04 p.m., by which time any more sightings would have been difficult.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
