Hi Fritz,
Regarding the effect that spruce budworm is having on warblers in the Atlan=
tic Provinces, I can say that over the last three fall seasons, the monitor=
ing we are doing of fall warbler migration on Brier Island has shown a rapi=
d increase in Cape May and Bay-breasted warbler numbers. Their numbers are =
not yet what they were in the late 1970s and early 1980s when the last outb=
reak took place but they are quickly approaching those levels.
The third species that is closely associated with a spruce budworm outbreak=
, Tennessee Warbler, has not yet shown a similar increase at our location.
I refer to the Atlantic Provinces because a large portion of the warblers b=
eing encountered in the fall in Nova Scotia originate from New Brunswick an=
d others are coming from PEI and Newfoundland.
If a spruce budworm outbreak again occurs in Cape Breton I expect a similar=
response by these species in your area.
Cheers,
Lance

Subject: EXTERNAL: [NatureNS] Cape May Warbler
Hi All,
On a walk today I videoed a Cape May Warbler as it fed in a nearby spru=
ce tree. It's the first CMW I've seen around here in many years and I'm wo=
ndering if the long forecast Spruce Budworm outbreak has any bearing on the=
observation.
I reported a male Indigo Bunting and female Rose-breasted Grosbeak at m=
y feeders yesterday but the posting has yet to appear on the naturens site =
so I'll list it again here. All the best.
