Yesterday, while weeding the raspberry patch of stray Common Milkweed, Alison discovered the milkweed plant had a Monarch caterpillar on it at the instar stage 4. We have not had any Monarch butterfly sightings here yet this year.

It takes almost two weeks to go from new egg to instar 4, so we had a visit from a female Monarch sometime around 13th of June. Last year the Monarch showed up in our field near the end of June and other years in early July. If they are going to arrive it should be soon.

The caterpillar is inside protected from predators and being fed Common Milkweed.
