Bold markings are for one of three things in my mind.

1. Camouflage...can't see that being the answer in this case.
2. Warning of distastefulness, or worse (i.e. "Do not eat.")
3. As in the peacock's tail...a display that says to the females, "Look how
obvious I can be, and yet nothing has eaten me; I must be fit to be the
father of your children!"

Whether it be 2 or 3, I don't know; maybe it's something else entirely.
