The Depth of Winter List (DOWL) starts today. It is a subset of the WBL whe=
re we track February birds and while we are not be getting hit with the Pol=
ar Vortex as much as the interior of the continent, it is bad enough and mu=
st be making life pretty miserable, if not shorter, for many birds.
Our DOWL average is 148 species. We finished January at 197 species which i=
s 4 less than last year but 3 more than the year prior. 197 was also our to=
tal for the WBL in 2015.
eBird lags a bit so it will likely be a day or two before I get the first D=
OWL update out but I see Ken MacAulay just posted he still has a Red-bellie=
d Woodpecker coming to his feeder so let's crown it as the first species on=
the DOWL.
