Hi All,
Trees will get cut and if even aged often clearcut. Petitioning=20
against wind, clearcuts or sunrise will have no effect.
However a very good case can be made against too much of a watershed=
=20
being clearcut in any one decade. Problems caused by excessive runoff,=20
such as siltation of streams and flood-trickle stream flow cycles will=20
in all but exceptional terrain be vanishingly small if no more than 10%=20
of a watershed is cut in any one decade.
Consequently I think something along these lines should be=20
considered. A live dog is better than a dead lion.
A futile protest may make some feel good but a suggestion which=20
eventually leads to improvement will make then feel better.
On a somewhat related note there are huge areas in NS which never=20
will be cut because they are free of forest. I have often wondered why.
Some of this may be due to frequent fires, set thousands of years ago=
=20
to encourage blueberry crops and if so there should be charcoal present;=20
charcoal is forever. And some no doubt due to being paved with very=20
coarse glacial debris, and some barrens (Corema, Empetrum and Kalmia)=20
bring to mind the folk tales of Rabbits weeping at the sight of land=20
that poor. A few inches of marsh mud would work wonders there I suspect.
   YT, DW. Kentville
