Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus)

Adult: uniform grey-brown to rufous-brown upperparts with white forehead & eyebrow & broad black band through eye distinctive. Crown upper tail coverts & tail often more rufescent than rest of upperparts. Underparts white to buff.

Immature: similar but upperparts & sides of underparts (& sometimes breast) barred with narrow wavy lackish lines; forehead brown. See Bull-headed, Tiger & Burmese Shrikes.

Range: East Asian India, Andamans, Nicobars, China, Hainan, Taiwan, Sundas and Philippines to New Guinea.. A common migrant in SE Asia (usually lowlands) up to 7,000 ft. Found in open country, second growth and gardens.
