African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia

Black History Month is celebrated as African Heritage Month in Nova Scotia. During this period, communities learn about and celebrate the history, contributions and culture of people of African descent.

The month-long celebration emerged from Negro History Week initiated in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) a Black historian, educator and publisher from New Canton, Virginia. February was initially chosen because of the birthdays of emancipator and orator Frederick Douglass (February 14) and President Abraham Lincoln (February 12).

The celebration is currently in its second decade in Nova Scotia.
