Sir James McCulloch (1819-1893)

Australian statesman

James McCulloch was born in Glasgow in 1819. He studied law and went to Melbourne, Australia as a young man to open a branch of Dennistoun brothers. In 1854 he was nominated to the Legislative Council and was returned for Wimmera as their representative in the Legislative Assembly.

In 1857-58 he was Minister of Trade and Customs for Australia and in 1859-60, Treasurer. On the defeat of the third O'Shanassy ministry in June 1862, he became Premier and Chief Secretary of the Victoria colony. McCulloch's ministry soon became involved in a struggle over the ministerial policy of trade protection. McCulloch had the support of Australia and the Governor, Sir Charles Darling, who was recalled by the home government for showing partisanship.

McCulloch resigned in 1869 but resumed when he was knighted and formed his third ministry in 1870. In June 1871 Sir James resigned again and held the office of Agent-General for Victoria in London until 1873, was created KCMG in 1874 and, returning to the colony, formed his fourth ministry in 1875. After his defeat in 1877, Sir James McCulloch returned to England, where he died at Ewell, Surrey on 30 January 1893.
