John Barnes served as a chaplain in Dundee in the 1550s.

In 1687, the provost of Glasgow was a Mr. Barnes.

George Barnes served as one of the first Scottish Labour MPs. In 1917, he was a member of the war cabinet. He was born in Dundee in 1859.
