Origin of Clan Gilkie

Crest of Clansfolk of Clan Gilkie
[Thin Blue Line]

The origin of the Clan or Scottish family "Gilkie" is not known.

Only one family by name Gilkie is known in Nova Scotia's history. The progenitor, William Gilkie, was a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, having been born there circa 1817. He emigrated to Nova Scotia as a ship's wright prior to February, 1840.

Descendant, Leslie Harnish, comments: "This William Gilkie has been my most frustrating ancestor. Everyone and everything says that's where he was born, but so far I can't find the name in Scotland. It has been suggested that maybe the actual surname was `Gilchrist' and `Gilkie' is a slang name for this last name."

She continues" "There is a `clan' of Gilkie's in the Massechusetts area of USA. Their family history says that they were from originally from Scotland and they `had long lost relatives in Canada'. Sambro, Nova Scotia seems to be the only place Gilkie's have lived in Canada. The earliest known ancestor in Massechusetts was a `Robert Gilkie who was or worked for a book publisher in Boston at the turn of the century'. There is a strong possibility of a connection, but no evidence so far."
