Many noble families are descended from the Royal line. Stewarts have held or hold the Dukedoms of Albany, Rothesay and Lennox, the Marquessate of Bute, and the Earldoms of Menteith, Angus, Atholl, Strathearn, Carrick, Buchan and Galloway.

Among other Stewart families were those of Bonkil, Blackhall and Greenock, Castlemilk, Balquidder, Achnacone, Ardsheal, Ardvorlich, Dalguise, Fasnacloich, Grandtully and Invernahyle.
