Shortly after the first International Gathering of the Clans in Nova Scotia in 1979, the Clan MacKay Society of New Scotland joined the Multicultural Council of Halifax/Dartmouth, played a part in the ethnic diversity that is Nova Scotia and participated with other ethnic groups in the annual multicultural festivals.

In the late 1980s, the MacKays convinced other Scottish clans in Nova Scotia to become involved. From that time, representatives of individual clans manned shifts at the Clans Booth during the Festivals.
