Spencer House on the Web

Greetings, Fellow Surfers! We are already into the second edition of our newsletter. You will note that part of this column is in block capitals. We are trying to see if that is easier for seniors to read. Please let us know your opinion. Thank you everyone for your support and suggestions regarding the senior's corner. Your suggestions and comments can be e-mailed to Linda MacKenzie at af088@ccn·cs·dal·ca.

I would really appreciate it if you would spread the word that Spencer House Seniors' Centre has become a public access terminal for older adults, for Chebucto Community Net. This means that if you are fifty-five plus you are eligible to drop in and use our computer to surf the internet. You can even phone us at (902) 421-6131 and reserve the computer in advance. We are located in the south end of Halifax at 5596 Morris Street. Our hours are 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday and 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on Saturdays.

We have dedicated volunteers who facilitate ongoing workshops. Support is available every Wednesday morning from 10:00 am to Noon. There is usually a staff person or member who can answer beginners questions between workshops.

The "Kermit Club" meets the third Saturday of each month at 1:00 pm at Spencer House. This is a chance for internet users and interested people to socialize and talk about their encounters. Beginners are welcome, and experience is not required. There is no fee, just 50 cents for tea or coffee.

Recently I found a home page for The Seniors Net. This interesting link will take you to many locations in cyberspace. Their e-mail address is seniors@seniorsnet.com. There is even a link for your grandchildren to follow! Last I heard they were holding a contest for the oldest internet surfer. The winner will be the proud owner of the new Windows 95 or IBM's OS WARP. I do not know the closing date, sorry! You'll just have to follow the link and find out yourself...

Some of you may be curious as to what Spencer House does. We are a drop in activity centre for older adults. We serve a home cooked meal Monday through Friday at noon for only $3.00 per lunch. We have a wide range of programs and services which cater to the 55+ crowd. I will tell you more next month!

I AM IN TOUCH WITH AN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WHO IS INTERESTED IN STARTING AN INTERGENERATIONAL PEN PAL E-MAIL PROGRAM. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE PART OF THE FIRST PEN PAL E-MAIL PROGRAM IN NOVA SCOTIA! YOU WOULD CORRESPOND WITH THE STUDENTS MONTHLY AT FIRST, AND THEN MORE FREQUENT IF BOTH PARTIES ARE ABLE AND INTERESTED. PLEASE E-MAIL MYSELF, LINDA MACKENZIE AT : AF088@CCN·CS·DAL·CA OR TELEPHONE ME AT (902) 421-6131. I LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.
