Computer Workshops

Welcome to this months Senior's Corner. We have been as busy as ever at Spencer House Senior's Activity Centre. This month we have a great line up of computer workshops, available to seniors at no charge.

I was very pleased to hear that a group of you came to lunch at Spencer House last week who had read about us on the Internet. We were thrilled you dropped in, and hope you enjoyed our home cooked hot meal.

Spencer House Senior's Activity Centre is a drop in centre for older adults. We cater to the fifty-five plus crowd, and the main focus is our hot meal served at noon, Monday- Friday. The cost for a complete meal is only $ 3.50 for members, and $ 4.00 for non-members. Membership runs the calender year and is only $ 8.00 per year.

Spencer House has a Public Access Terminal, for older adults , for the Chubecto Community Net. This means that if you are fifty five plus you are welcome to drop in and use the computer, at no charge. You only need an an account number with Chubecto Community Net, or you can log on as a guest, until you set up your account.

Spencer House is located at 5596 Morris Street, Halifax, N.S., B3J 1C2, phone (902) 421-6131. Our doors open Monday thru Friday, 9am - 4:30pm, and Saturdays 10am - 4:00.

Spencer House Computer Workshops

"Introduction To Computers" is a new workshop being presented by Mike Jennex of Computer Annex, 958 Cole Harbour Road, Dartmouth, N.S. B2V 1E6, phone (902) 434-4424. This will be a great workshop for seniors who would like to know how to operate a computer. Mike will also be offering information on what questions to ask before you purchase a computer. We will meet in the dining room at Spencer House, where computer equipment will be available for viewing.

Intro to Windows, and Intro to the Internet will be facilitated by our dedicated volunteer Joe Baker. Joe has been volunteering to teach the internet at Spencer House for a while now, and Joe we certainly all appreciate your help.

We are also fortunate to be able to provide ongoing internet support, Wednesdays at Spencer House. When we do not have Wednesday workshops Joe Baker, and our other dedicated volunteer Judy Giles are here between the hours of 10am and noon to give you one to one support. Thank you!

Internet Passport Services Inc. has donated an account to Spencer House. You are welcome to come in and surf the world wide web through the IPS service. To learn how to use IPS just come in on Wednesday, and our volunteers will be able to assist you. We look forward to offering an Intro to IPS in the future. For furthur information on IPS please contact Jeffrey Campbell, President, 36B Topple Drive, Dartmouth, N.S., phone (902) 468-3763, or e-mail them at
