The roller coaster came about as a way to have the excitement of Russian ice slides (traceable to at least the 1400s) be available in warmer climates. In fact, in some cultures, coasters are still called "Russian Mountains". The first wheeled versions appeared in Europe in the late 1700s and modern renditions arrived in the mid 1880s in The United States & Canada, with many refinements after that.
Here is an alphabetical list of videos that deal primarily with the roller coaster, and their designers and builders.
Be aware that videos in other sections may have parts devoted to roller coasters, so be sure to look there, as well. Videos Header Also, check the Books section.

________
AMERICA SCREAMS (1987) NTSC
Hosted by Vincent Price! (who apparently was a coaster fan and
called the rides "Rollie Coasters"), this is an edited video of a
48-minute television special originally shot in 1977 and 78. It
highlights about a dozen coasters in The United States. Included
are "The Mindbender". "Colossus", "The Loch Ness Monster", and
"Gemini". *(As shown, this version is borderline - the color is
weak and sound quality so-so. [It appears to be a poor quality
film-to-video transfer.] Each coaster is too quickly glossed over.
Other segments such as interviews, "Beast" construction, Utah's
Lagoon, Cedar Point's "Coastermania", etc. are shortened or
eliminated. However, considering the historial nature of the
video and that it was one of the first coaster TV specials, even
this version should probably be in your collection.)

AMERICA'S GREATEST ROLLER COASTER THRILLS IN 3-D (1994) NTSC
This video shows 14 of The United States' top roller coasters
including "The Big Bad Wolf", The Coney Island "Cyclone",
"Drachen Fire", "Kumba", "The Magnum XL-200", "Mean Streak",
"Raptor", "The Steel Phantom", "Top Gun", etc. On and off-ride
views coupled with interviews with Ron Toomer and American
Coaster Enthusiast Ray Ueberroth. * (Recommended) Except for some
under exposures on "The Beast" and "Mean Streak", the photography
and color quality on this video are excellent, as are the selected
coasters. Our complaints are the poor 3-D effect (it improves
slightly if you sit close to the screen but then the scan lines
become visible), the some-what cliched script given to the two
hosts, so-so audio quality, and lack of world (metric) measurements
in the on-screen specs. (Non-Americans get out your calculators!)
Also there are errors in some of the specifications. However,
this video will still impress any coaster buff.

AMERICA'S GREATEST ROLLER COASTER THRILLS 2 IN 3-D (1996) NTSC, DVD
The second edition of the video reviewed above has another 14
roller coasters in The United States profiled. This time coasters
like The "Comet", "Great Nor'Easter", "Loch Ness Monster",
"Mantis", "Montu", and others are shown. *(This is one of their
better efforts. The narrator remains neutral and just introduces the
parks which are then further discussed by a park representative or in
some cases (Knoebels, Kennywood, Great Escape) by the park owner. This
adds a little character to the video. The coaster variety was good,
(stand-ups, inverteds, loads of classic (and new) woodies, and a few
novelty coasters. Overall, the coasters that were chosen were filmed
well, with a few exceptions. They include the Kings Dominion "Grizzly"
which has no point-of-view, "Wild Thing" and The "Great Nor'Easter"
[which have the front-seat views obliterated by special effects],
and Outer Limits" - What's the point of filming a dark ride ?!? )

AWESOME RIDES (1994) NTSC
This is aimed at children and shows on & off-ride views of Cedar
Point's coasters along with flat rides from a travelling carnival.
Also shown is a portable coaster being assembled and views of "The
First Ferris Wheel" (which is erroneously attributed to George
Ferris' big one of 1893 - see "Ferris Wheels" in The CEC's
"Coaster Books" section, plus look in the "World's Fair Books"
section for "Photographic History of the World's Fair"). *(Not the
best for the serious coaster buff, there are too many repeat shots
of Cedar Point stock footage and many errors in the text of the
narration. Some of the shots of rides being assembled dwell too
long on little happening. This was likely done to flesh out the
running time as this seems to be a shortened version of the
following listing.)

"The Best of Kings Island's Rollercoasters"
Shows 4 of the then 5 coasters in the park. On and off-ride views
of "The Beast", "King Cobra", "The Racer", and "Vortex". * (Not
Recommended. Lack of a steady-cam results in just too much camera
shake to really appreciate these rides. Also the camera angle is
way to low on "The Vortex" to see what elements are coming up.
Consequently, several viewings are necessary in order to realize
that there are 2 loops, 2 corkscrew turns, a boomerang, and an
upwards spiral. One thing though, the camera exposure in "The
Beast's" tunnels is superior to "AMERICA'S GREATEST ROLLER

Produced in IMAX format. It starts off with some on-board footage of
rides like "Kumba" and "Montu", but then goes on to detail how motion
pictures work and how they are incorporated into simulator rides like
"Back to the Future". The mechanisms that move the seating are shown,
with their origins in flight simulators discussed. *(This is not a
film that hard-core coaster fans are likely to really enjoy due to the
fact that few are shown. However, the details of how simulators were
developed are interesting and well done.)
