2nd Annual Brick Wall Busters

Road Blocks in Your Genealogy Research: How to Proceed

Have you ever reached a dead end in your research and you can't get beyond it? Do you need that one little birth, death or marriage record that will add one more generation to your family tree?

GANS would like to offer our members an opportunity to present their Brick Wall queries to two Certified Genealogists; Dr. Allan Marble, CG(C), President, GANS and Ginny Clark CG(C), Past President, Genealogical Institute of the Maritimes. These two experts will provide direction to different types of Nova Scotia resources that might help further your research and break down that Brick Wall!
Here's how it will work:

  • Member queries can be emailed to: ganslectures@gmail.com or

mailed to: Genealogical Association of Nova Scotia
    3045 Robie St., Suite 222
Halifax, Nova Scotia B3K 4P6 Canada

  • Please include all pertinent available information such as surname and given name, approximate dates, area of Nova Scotia, piece of information you would like to find, sources you have already checked, and your contact information; otherwise your query may not be accepted.
  • The query must be of a length that can be read within two minutes.
  • The deadline for receiving the queries is midnight October 29, 2011.
  • 6 queries will be selected to be addressed at our lecture on November 22, 2011: 3 from local members who will be attending the meeting and 3 from members outside of the Halifax Regional Municipality who are not able to attend the meeting.
  • Allan and Ginny will contact the 6 members whose queries have been selected. They may require further information, so please remember to include your contact information.
  • The evening of the lecture, the local members will read their queries for the benefit of other attendees. A member of the GANS Executive will read the queries from the members from "away".
  • Our expert genealogists will provide names and locations of sources that might provide the answer to each query. The responses to the "away" queries will be emailed/mailed to the member who submitted the query. The length of the answer will be limited to approximately 5 minutes.
  • Queries and responses will be added to the website in the Members Only Area for the benefit of all members after the lecture.

Show & Tell

Our society encourages those interested in their family history to participate in the social aspect of genealogy. This is our 2nd event of this type. The Show and Tell last year was fabulous and brought together people with many different research interests. As well, we heard some great stories and saw some interesting family heirlooms.

Please join us on February 25, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. for our 2nd Annual Genealogy Show and Tell.

Come and tell us about your research and meet other folks who may share your genealogy interests.

How will it work?

Members are invited to take ten minutes to tell us about your research. We have 10 spots to fill.

Attendees might have some questions for you or have suggestions on how you can further your research.

Have you written a book on your family history? Do you create heritage scrapbooks? Bring them along and tell us your methods and give us some tips.

Do you have an old family bible or other family items that would interest genealogists? Tell us how you acquired them and why they are important to you.

Are you new to genealogy? Browse our publications, pick up some handouts and research tips and get to know some fellow genealogists.

Don't forget to wear your family t-shirts, hats or buttons!

What if you are an "away" member and can't attend? Well, you can send us a brief description of your research including surnames and counties and we will display them that afternoon as well as on our website. Please limit your submission to 100 words and include an email address where potential cousins can reach you.

Do you have a blog, website or Facebook page you'd like us to know about? Send us the url and we will post it.

If you would like to participate in person on February 25th, please email ganslectures@gmail.com to register.

Member submissions can be emailed to ganslectures@gmail.com Please put Genealogy Show and Tell in the subject line.

Deadline to register and for submissions is February 20, 2012.

There will be a door prize and light refreshments will be served.
