Despite the big snow storm, the Nova Scotia Youth Chess Festival was held Saturday November 15, 1997 at Carrefour du Grand Havre, the French Language Grade School in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The tournament was organized in categories by age. These categories were under 10, under 12, under 14 and under 18 years of age as of January 1, 1998.
Thirty-nine young Nova Scotians took part.

Under 12 years old 1.Anthony Federico, Halifax (Halifax Grammar) won first with .Alex Livingston, Halifax (Halifax Grammar) Gary Ng, Dartmouth (Ian Forsythe) Jeffrey Veniot, Halifax (Oxford) tied for second. There was plenty of tough competition! Standing behind is the Tournament director, Kim Tufts.

Patrick Roy, Dartmouth (Ecole-du-Carrefour) won first by the narrowest of margins by tie break over Bassam Mathara, Bedford (Bedford Jr High). A hard fought battle by both. Congratulations! Standing behind is the Tournament director, Kim Tufts.

Tyler Reddy, the 1997 Nova Scotia Junior and Cadet Champion won the Under 18 year old section with Mathew Furrow placing second.
Carrefour du Grand Havre also hosted a french language book sale the same day - along with a cafe. Both parents and children enjoyed the food service!

From there successful participants may qualify for the National Championships! Note that the Youth Chess Festiveal organizers have renamed the age categories "mosquito", "pee wee", "bantam" and "minor"--along with "cadet" and "junior" that the Canadian Chess Federation oversees.
