National Chess Master, Ed Urquhart of St. Mary's University swept the Maritime Open Chess Tournament over the Thanksgiving weekend at Dalhousie University in Halifax with six wins and allowing only two draws. Nova Scotia dominated gruelling eight round event that brought 48 masters, experts and hopefuls together from all three Maritime Provinces.

RIGHT: Justin Gulati and Ed Urquhart review their seventh round his game while others watch. Bruce Fleury is seated looking at the camera.

Mr. Urquhart has had an outstanding chess year. He obtained the Chess Master title, won several tournaments and lead the Nova Scotia Chess Team to victory in an interprovincial match with New Brunswick while studying at St. Mary's University. His strong tactical play is feared by many!

LEFT: Cedric Davies (left) takes on Ed Urquhart (right) in the last round while the Maritime Junior Champion, Justin Gulati looks on.

Young Cedric Davies of Halifax surprised many with a strong second place finish with 6 1/2 out of eight, beating many more experienced opponents, including a win and draw against two chess masters. Mr. Davies, 18, who is in his first year of university at St. Mary's, still qualifies as a junior. He's clearly a promising star for youth chess in the provincewhich needs to do better on the National scene.

LEFT: National Master Anthony Howarth of St. John NB (facing us) was held to a draw by Mike Eldridge (with his back to us) in the seventh round as former Maritime Open Champion Ken Duff looks on.

Chess veteran Mr. Michael Eldridge of Falmouth, a former Nova Scotian champion, was a clear third with six points out of a possible eight, a credit with strong strategical style. It's reported that this result coupled with a match result will power Mike's rating over 2000 - in the expert zone. Congratulations Mike.

RIGHT: Steve Duffy and David Kenney concentrate on their endgame after most players finished in the seventh round.

Chess is the most challenging of mind sports. An eight round weekend chess tournament is a novelty in Nova Scotia, requiring physical and mental endurance. "It's similar to writing eight college final exams in four days," said Nova Scotia Chess Association president, Mr. Steve Saunders, of Blockhouse. "Many people did not have the stamina to play all eight rounds well." Certainly some of the early leaders fell back in later rounds and it was some of the younger players that powered ahead!

LEFT: A turning point in the tournament occurred on Board One in Round 5 when Ed Urquhart (right) successfully defended against a daring sacrifical attack by the then tournament leader, Alvah Mayo(left) while the chess fans look on! With this success, Urquhart took the lead and never looked back.

The organizers, Mr. Albert Ede of Sackville and Mr. Jim Brennan of Halifax were pleased with the participation.

There are still several open tournaments in the Nova Scotia this year - the Halifax Open November 7-9 and Truro Open on November 22-23. Young people will be interested in the Canadian Youth Chess Festival Regional Championship on November 15 at Carrefour de Grand Havre in Dartmouth in conjunction with the Canada's Chess'n Math Association. Contact Kim Tufts (902)-423-9274 for details. Other youth tournaments will be held November 1, 29 and December 13 at the same location.

Games of the 1997 Maritime Open

Games of the Maritime Open are available here in PGN format.

Webmaster's Note: The tournament is very well organized thanks to the hard work Albert Ede and Jim Brennan. Albert Ede thanked everyone for coming and gave a special thanks to the NB Chess Association for making this tournament possible. There's a good representation from all three Maritime Provinces with a few short of 50 participants.

One final note, as part of his original plan for this tournament, Albert Ede is organizing a Sackville Chess Club. If you are interested in this club, please contact:
