Nova Scotia at the Canadian Chess Challenge 1998
A hastily assembled Nova Scotian team finished 10th in Chess and Math's national youth tournament organized by school grades, the 1998 Canadian Chess Challenge, in Winnipeg. Here at the individual results. To be fair, team was assembled at the last minute and because of that were not as fully prepared as they might have been. The distance also meant some contenders could not go. Nevertheless, they has a good time.
Jeff Coakley coakley@auracom.com wrote: "Although their competitive result was disappointing, the Nova Scotia team had an enjoyable trip to Winnipeg for the national finals. Top scorers were: Gary Ng (grade 6) 4 points; Robin Thorsen (grade 4) 3 points; and Matthew Furrow (grade 11) 2 points. Gary Ng was the event's Most Valuable Player. He received a plaque for scoring the largest percentage of points on his team. The team's closest match was a narrow loss to P.E.I. (5.5 - 6.5) Mike Currell was team captain, Terry Thorsen a referee, and Jeff Coakley the tournament director." Here are the results:

The 1999 Canadian Chess Challenge, organized and sponsored by the Chess'n Math Association will be held in Prince Edward Island. The cost of participation should not prevent young Nova Scotians from participating in that event.
