Report by "Kim Tufts" nstn1286@fox.nstn.ca to chess-ns@chebucto.ns.ca on Great Taste Active #4 of 1998, that took place Sunday May 17, 1998 at the Great Taste Coffee Shoppe on Spring Garden Road in Halifax:

Another successful event in downtown Halifax at The Great Taste Coffee Shoppe on Spring Garden Rd. The players from PEI swept the Open Section as Anthony Howarth and Fred McKim tied for first place. Their encounter was a lively one as both players flagged, Howarth up a couple of pawns but missed calling McKim's flag which fell about five seconds before his own! NS's lone hope Ed Urquhart did not have a good event, dropping pieces against Gary Phillips in round one and then losing against Harold Uuetoa by overpressing in a likely drawn position.

The U1500 Section was won by Gilbert Bernard who used his nearly 500 point rating difference from Active to Standard to good advantage! :) Ken Cashin tried to win against David Poirier in the final round but drew with a wild position at the end.

Many thanks again to Jerry MacKinlay for the site.
