Either Mr. Charlton or Mr. Mayo could represent Nova Scotia at the Atlantic Closed Chess Championship in Charlottetown this summer. The Atlantic Closed usually leads to establishing a regional representative for the Canadian Closed. The Canadian Closed event sends one chess player to the world chess championship governed by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs, the world body governing organized chess). But, FIDE's formula for the world championship is currently in a state of flux. Consequently the lead up determining the hopefuls is as well.

The Nova Scotia Closed was held as a Chess Federation of Canada rated, 5-round swiss-pairing tournament, April 24 to 26, at Sub building's Cafeteria St. Mary's University, in Halifax. Entrants qualified qualify based upon their Chess Federation of Canada ratings.
