After defeating Joe Clair in their fourth round match, Cedric Davies needed only a draw to claim sole first place in the Antigonish Open. However, the redoubtable Tom Cosman, held tough under time pressure to pull himself and Joe, who defeated Bradley Poulette in the last round, into a 3 way tie for first. The aforementioned Brad won the U1700 prize outright. The 3 victors shared the first and second prize money, each receiving $47.00 and Bradley took home $45.00. Cedric gets the title, with a superior cumulative score.

The event was held at the Wandlyn Inn in Antigonish. The manager at the hotel expressed an interest in sponsoring future events, in particular, the runoff events to select representatives for regional or national championships.

While the computerized pairings worked nicely, it was the ability to generate standings and cross-tables instantly that the program proved its worth.

The event had representation from all the 'hotbeds' of chess in Nova Scotia with representation from Lunenburg, Halifax, Wolfville, New Glasgow, Antigonish, Wyhcocomagh, and Eskasoni. John Hanson from St. John, N.B., visiting family, quite kindly decided leave behind some rating points. Thanks to all who braved the uncertain weather forecasts.

I very much enjoyed the tournament and very greatly appreciate the kind words of the participants.
