Subject: Chocolate Lake Chess tournament

The Chocolate Lake Chess Tournament ran today at the local recreation centre. Cedric Davies directed and I helped out. In all, twenty (20) kids participated in the March break event, with an over 10 and a 10 and under section.

Over 10 Years Old

2nd Jason Kenney

3rd Ian Mahar
(4th tie Alex Livingston and Igor Geshelin)

10 Years Old and Under

1st Anthony Federico
2nd Ben Mudry
3rd Joel Morin

Perhaps the biggest surprise was Ben Mudry who's only in grade 2. He upset his big brother (grade 5) in the last round, scoring 4/5. With a little study all these kids could go quite far.

Jason David Kenney ap367@chebucto.ns.ca adds, "Also to add to the Chocolate Lake tournament, I was very surprised to see what Joel Morin played in his playoff game. In a 10 minute play-off game, this young man was ready to sac his Queen for mate (Actually, his Queen was hanging, and he moved a Rook up to threaten mate). I thought it was quite daring, with his third-place medal/title on the line. It seemed like a very tough move for an 8 or 9 year old to find. Maybe there will be some new tactical geniouses among us in the next 10 years?"
