Saturday, May 10, 1997

Jim Brennan wrote: We had a good turnout of 12 players for the CFC rated section. Tying for first were Antoni and myself with 3/4. Antoni lost only to Jason when he self mated in a winning game with more time. I lost obviously to Antoni when I sacrificed an exchange with about 5 minutes left and missed a counter tactic in the continuation, the right move would have been interesting. I was very lucky to have 3 out or 4 winning twice after giving pieces for no compensation just oversights but one was against Jason( move 6!) so his luck evened out I guess. Tyler Reddy and Matthew Furrow were top cadets at 2.5.

In another Active time scramble yet another rule questioning occurred when in a blitz off in a rook and pawn ending neither player recording there was apparently a 3 fold repetition of position which is being claimed as the players continued to blitz off but was witnessed by another player watching the game. As there is no official arbiter I accepted the observing player's confirmation of the draw. Technicalities may say I was wrong in my decision but we are not playing under Ideal circumstances and I just made the best decision I could under the circumstances. It would probably be a good idea for everyone to refresh on the rules for Active chess and the claiming of draws etc.

Jim Brennan, jbrennan@fox.nstn.ca writes about the first Sunday Active tournament on March 9th at Dalhousie University's Student Union Building Cafeteria, "Rob Villeneuve won with Steve Saunders second. There were only 5 players out hope to see more next time this sort of chess is reletively free of pressure (can get the old heart pumping :-) ) as everyones ratings are out of whack and it is just a good time. Some very bizzarre results occured with a lot of draws or losses happening because of time pressure. This sort of chess is not for the weak of heart. The guys that were there are warmed up and ready for the next one though with some more proper active strategy in mind. Kim has organized events for the next few weeks so get in touch with him for more info."
