Bluenose Chess Club Championship

Report by: Kim Tufts

This year's championship - the 25th played at Dalhousie- was won by Ed Urquhart and Jason Kenney, marking the first time co-winners were declared and also that a father and son had their names engraved on the prestigious Bluenose Cup (Dave in 1979 and 1982). A total of 41 players in two sections (Open and U1700) took part.

The tournament started off interestingly in room 224-226 of the SUB before moving to the Green Room for the weekend. The games in the Open section were surprisingly long with few under four hours duration. In the end the Experts prevailed for the most part with only a couple of draws given. Jason Kenney pulled a rabbit out of his hat to win against Ed Keunecke. Number two seed Rob Villeneuve withdrew after the first round citing schedule conflicts.

Saturday's rounds went about as expected also. The Green Room proved popular. I'd had misgivings about moving there but it's been improved with better lighting and carpeting. We were also given much better tables than our previous foray a few years ago, which helped immensely. Many thanks to the SUB staff and Shelly Brown of their Reservations Department.

Don Weagle won the draw prize, an instructional piece of software called "Maurice Ashley Teaches Chess". Mr Weagle related that he had just won $175 in the Super 7 the night before so I guess he had an abundance of luck that weekend!

The only other mysteries of the day were a sudden ice-storm which made the roads treacherous for the morning round, and made pairings interesting. And in the evening Ed Urquhart took a bye to calm a flu. He'd return on Sunday, much to the consternation of his opponents.

Round 4 would see Ed defeat Alvah Mayo in an interesting kingside attack, the pawns frozen with Ed playing an early g4. An instructive and interesting game. Other noteworthy games were Cosman-Kenney and Gulati-Davies.

The last round would be something of an anticlimax as Ed would grind down Justin in what looked to be an even game, a mistake near the end turning it in Ed's favour. Jason would defeat Alvah in a Dragon pretty handily. The U1700 section was won by Jim Gilks with a perfect 5-0 score. Jim didn't seem to be in any trouble in any of his games although he did have to work to defeat Garrett Keddy, who finished clear second. Other prize winners the top U1900 finishers, Brad Armstrong, Albert Ede and Yadviga Gawetski. Many thanks to all who came out and hope to see you next millenium!

Nova Scotia Youth Chess Championship

The 1999 Nova Scotia Youth Chess Championship, held in the historic Cambridge Military Library on March 28, was organized by the Nova Scotia Schoolastic Chess Association. This tournament was used to determine the Provincial Youth Chess Champions in four age categories, U18, U14, U12, and U10. The winners of each age category, qualify to represent the Province in the national Canadian Youth Chess Championships being held in Vancouver in early July.

The winners of the 1999 Provincial Youth Chess Champions for each age category are as follows: Under 18 - Jason Kenney (Dartmouth); Under 14 - Gary Ng (Dartmouth); Under 12 - Robin Thorsen (Truro); and Under 10 - Stefan Behme (Dartmouth). The Nova Scotia Chess Association congratulates all of the new Provincial Youth Champions as well as the other competitors for participating in this event. Since Tyler Reddy won the NS Cadet Championship, only a few months ago, he will be considered to be the Under 16 Champion and will be offered the U16 spot, representing NS in the National Championship.

Proposed Nova Scotia vs New Brunswick / P.E.I. Match

Ed Urquhart is trying to set up a match between NS and a combined NB/PEI team. The format will most likely be a five person team that would have everyone on one team play all members of the other team. Tentative dates for this event are Aug 13-15,1999. These "provincial matches" started in the 1970s and have been held on a periodic basis since that time. Based on the number of recent e-mail messages regarding this event, I believe the 1999 version will attract a lot of interest.

The following "Top 50" list contains the names of current CFC members who have played in at least one CFC rated event during the last two years. Inactive players have now been dropped from this list regardless of their current CFC membership status. The Junior list also contains only current CFC members. It does not include any individuals who did not purchase a CFC membership for at least one year.

NOVA SCOTIA CLOSED

The 1999 Nova Scotia Closed Chess Championship was held in the "Theater Auditorium" of St. Mary's University over the April 30 to May 2 weekend. The tournament was run as a two section event, with the winner of the premiere "A Section" receiving the right to represent Nova Scotia in the Canadian Closed Championships being held in Brantford, Ontario later this year. The entrants qualified based upon their Chess Federation of Canada ratings with the top six players in the province who were willing to participate selected for the "A Section". Several Players from the "B Section" were moved into the "A Section" at the last moment due to a few players declining their invitation to compete in the premiere "A Section".

There were a lot of hard fought battles in this event, evidenced by the small number of draws. It seems everyone was in a fighting spirit and were willing to risk "going down in flames" rather that settle for a draw. When the dust finally settled, Gerald Lomond of Wolfville came out on top with a score of 4/5. Gerald, the only player to go undefeated, gave up only two draws to Ed Urquhart and Glenn Charlton. Tyler Reddy of Dartmouth placed second only 1/2 point behind the winner. Steve Saunders from Blockhouse, who also went undefeated, placed first in the smaller "B Section" event.

The Nova Scotia Chess Association would like to congratulate Gerald Lomond, our new Nova Scotia Chess Champion for 1999. In addition, we would like to thank Glenn Charlton for organizing this event, Ed Urquhart for locating the tournament site, and to Saint Mary's University for providing the elaborate playing site. In addition, we would also like to thank David Kenney for being the Tournament Director for this annual event and to the spectators who showed up to encourage the participants.

The Canadian Chess Challenge

The Canadian Chess Challenge was held at Slemon Park (former CFB Summerside) in Prince Edward Island on the Victoria day weekend. This year, Nova Scotia sent perhaps the strongest team it has ever had and it showed in the final results.. The NS team placed 7th scoring 43 points out of a possible 108. After finishing in last place for the last few years, a 7th place result this year was something to celebrate.

The NS team edged out Manitoba in the last round with Tyler Reddy's win over Joshua Henson of Manitoba. It was a dramatic finish as Nova Scotia with 36.5 points played Manitoba who also had 36.5 points going into the last round. Tyler Reddy's game was the last to finish with the score tied at 5.5 - 5.5. Tyler only needed a draw in his game to place 1st in Grade 10, but he decided to decline Joshua Henson's offer of a draw to help the NS team. If Tyler drew his game, NS would have finished tied with Manitoba in 7th-8th place. However, if Tyler was able to win, the NS team would be pushed one point ahead of Manatoba and into 7th place. I believe everyone appreciated the extra effort Tyler Reddy made to help the team and were glad that he won this important game.

The NS Chess Association would like to congratulate all members of the NS team for their contribution to the team's success this year. Special congratulations go to Tyler Reddy (8/9) who won the 1st place trophy for Grade 10, Garry Ng (7/9) who won the 2nd place trophy for Grade 7 and to Robin Thorsen (5/9) who won the 3rd place trophy for Grade 5. In addition we would also like to congratulate Jeff Coakley for winning the oustanding contribution award for his work with the Nova Scotia Schoolastic Chess Association. Jeff and the other members of the NSSCA executive have done an excellent job of developing and promoting chess at the schoolastic level during the last year.
