NS Chess Association

The Nova Scotia Chess Association would like to see a specific set of qualification rules and format established for the various "provincial championship" tournaments that are held every year. These tournaments would include the Nova Scotia Closed, Nova Scotia Junior and Nova Scotia Cadet. The benefits of having a predetermined set format and qualification rules would prevent a lot of confusion over how these tournaments are run and who is qualified / selected to play. The NS Chess Association would like to have the new rules established and in place for next year (1999).

A preliminary discussion on this issue was held during the recent NS Closed with a number of proposals put forward by the players in attendance. However, we would like to hear from all players in the province who would like to provide any suggestions or other input on the format and qualification rules for the various "provincial championship" tournaments. Your input should be directed to Steve Saunders, President of the NS Chess Association or to any of the CFC Governors (KimTufts, Glenn Charlton or David Kenney). The next newsletter will provide an outline of the various proposals and explain how the NS Chess Association will decide on which proposal will be selected for each of these tournaments.

Tournament Organizers Wanted

It is becoming apparent we have a shortage of tournament organizers in the Halifax and other selected areas of the province. Without a core number of organizers and tournament directors, the frequency of chess events will diminish. We have already seen a decline in the number of tournaments in the Halifax area during the last six months.

I believe everyone would like to see more CFC rated events held. However, without additional people willing to help out, this is unlikely to occur. If we were to find six people each willing to take on the responsibility for organizing one event per year, this would go a long way towards filling the current void. In order for chess to grow in the province, we need more people involved with organizing, rather than leaving most of the responsibility to a few people scattered throughout the province.

If you have never organized a chess tournament before or served as a tournament director it is relatively easy to get started. First of all, you need to find and reserve a suitable playing site. You then must decide on the structure of the prize fund, determine an entry fee, advertise the event several months in advance, and find a TD. At the start of the tournament you must collect entry fees and CFC dues. At the end, you must distribute the prizes, submit a tournament report to the CFC along with CFC dues collected and required rating fees. As you can see there is not too much to organizing a chess tournament! Please get involved, as we need your help.

Great Taste Coffe Shop Actives

The Great Taste Coffee Shop located on Spring Garden Road in Halifax sponsored a number of Sunday afternoon (game in 30 minutes) active chess tournaments this winter. These four round tournaments have been very popular with the players who have turned out in surprising numbers. The active tournaments are starting to become a bit of a tradition here in Halifax. Many thanks to Jerry MacKinlay and the staff at The Great Taste Coffee Shop for providing the site.

Active #1 was held on January 18 and attracted 32 players who competed in this two-section tournament. Tyler Reddy won the Open Section with 3.5 points. Gerald Lomond placed second with 3.0 points.

The Under 1500 Section was won by John Klapstein with 3.5 points. Tied for second with 3.0 points were Jason Kenney, Isaac Saney, Brian McGrath, and Duane Thomas.

Active #2 was held on February 1 with 29 players in competition. In the Open Section, there was a three-way tie for first. Antoni Wysocki, Ed Urquhart and Alvah Mayo all ended up with 3.0 points after Alvah tripped up Ed in the 4th round.

The Under 1600 Section was won by Ken Cashin with 3.5 points. Tied for second with 3.0 points were R. Young, Jason Kenney, D. Poirier, and John Cordes.

Active #3 was held on March 16 with 16 players in attendance. The winner of this event was Jim Brennan who ended up with 3.5 points at the end of this four round event. Tied for second with 3.0 points were Tyler Reddy and David Kenney.

Active #4 was held the day after the NS Blitz Championship on May 17 with 21 players in attendance. In the open section Fred McKim and Anthony Howorth tied for 1st -2nd place with a 3.5 score for this five round event. John Klapstein placed 3rd with 3.0 points. Gilbert Bernard with 3.5 points won the U1500 section. Phil Boyle and Ken Kashin tied for 2nd - third place.

Atlantic Native Championship

This year's tournament held on March 27-29 in Eskasoni, Cape Breton and attracted six competitors. Gary Phillips of Halifax who ended up winning four games and drawing only one opponent in this round robin event won the tournament. Joe Clair from Cape Breton placed second winning four games and losing only one game to the tournament winner. I understand next year's tournament will be held in Cambridge, NS as the winner of this tournament received the right to host the event in the following year.

Late Breaking News: Toronto International Open

Tyler Reddy has just returned from playing in the Toronto International Open Chess Tournament where he played in the U2300 section obtaining a 4-3 result. I understand Tyler may gain about 146 points for his result, which would make him Nova Scotia's newest "Candidate Master", or Expert. He beat Milan Trbic (2148), Ted Kret (2145), Brian Profit (2137), and Barry Thorvardson (2183). He lost to Tom Schmidt (2169), Felix Leriche (2294), and to Christopher Chu (2230). Congratulations Tyler for your outstanding performance against very strong opposition.

Cape Breton Regional Championship

It appears, after almost a dormant state of about five years, chess activity has begun again in Cape Breton ! During the last five years, there have only been a few isolated chess tournaments held in CB. However, within the past twelve months there have been at least five events held on the island with more to come.

The Cape Breton Regional Muncipality Open was held on January 17-18 in Sydney and attracted eighteen competitors. At the end, the two highest rated players, Damir Miletic (formerly from Bosnia) and Alvah Mayo tied for first with "3.5" points in this four round tournament. Mato Miletic (Damir's father), Gerald LeBlanc and Greg Johnson finished with "3.0" points.

1.Nf3 Nf6 2.g3 c5 3.b3?! It's probably wrong to play for a Q-side fianchetto in this position, as black can set up the V formation c5, d6, e5 to block out the Q-Bishop with White's knight already developed on f3, it's doubtful white can gain anything from the weakness of the 'd5' square. 3...Nc6 4.Bb2 d5 5.c4? Thoughtless play. With 5.e3! White effectively limits black's choices, and keeps the option of Bb5 despite having played g3. e.g. 5.. .Bg4 6.Bb5! Rc8 7.h3 Bh5?! 8g4 Bg6 9.Ne5 with advantage. Against 5...e6, white can play a normal Reti with 6.c4 and Bg2 or a Nimzovich attack with 6.Bb5. 5...d4 6.d3 e5 7.Bg2 Be7 8.0-0 Naively expecting black to do the same. An interesting idea for white is to play e4 with the point that if black doesn't capture en passant, he has no advantage. Therefore, after 8.e4 de3 e.p. 9. fe3 e4 10.de4 Qd1+ 11.Kxd1 Nxe4 12.Nf1, whites position, although difficult, may be tenable. White can also better prepare e4 with 8.Na3. 8...Bg4 9.Na3 Blacks attacking potential is such that he already can consider sacrificial continuations. White could play dxe5 if the rook weren't en prise. The e-pawn must be captured. Lunenburg County Championship

Glen Charlton, a candidate master from Halifax emerged the winner of the Lunenburg County Open held in Bridgewater on the April 17-19 weekend. A total of 37 serious chess enthusiasts, an increase from 27 last year, took part in the three day event.

Glenn Charlton took the lead in the last round of the tournament by defeating Damir Miletic of Sydney, Nova Scotia. Mr. Miletic is an immigrant from Croitia where he played in world class chess tournaments until the outbreak of civil war there. Mr. Miletic later described the game as "equally balanced" but missed a 3-move check mate combination found by Mr. Charlton.

Damir Miletic defeated the Maritime Open Champion and Canadian Chess Master Ed Urquhart, a St. Mary's University student, a round earlier. Mr. Miletic and Mr. Urquhart tied for second place overall with Oh Ko Kyung of Halifax. Here is a list of the class/prize winners:

RATED UNDER 1800
First: Oh Ko Kyong 4.0 points
Second: Jim Hayward 3.5 points

RATED UNDER 1600
First: Joseph Shea 3.0 points

Simul at Chapter's

Ed Urquhart donated his time to help the Bluenose Chess Club and the Nova Scotia Chess Association promote chess in Nova Scotia by putting on a simultaneous exhibition at the Chapter's Bookstore on Sunday March 15.

During the simul, which ran from about 12:30 to 4:00pm, Ed took on 30 opponents, winning 26, drawing one, and losing only three games. Jason Kenney, Alex Fraser, and one other person who I did not know were the lucky people who managed to obtain victories against Ed. Chapter's gave them all a book of their choice for winning their respective games. Ed did not have "easy" opponents in the simul as numerous "seasoned veterans" from the local chess scene showed up to challenge the Maritime Open Champion.

Chapter's provided ten large tables located down the center aisle for the simul. This location gave us maximum visibility with the large number of Sunday afternoon visitors to the store. The simul was the first thing anyone would see after coming in the front door. Chapter's also set up an excellent display of chess books around the simul and displayed our listing of Chess Clubs in Nova Scotia as well as our recommended chess book list. Full page posters containing info on the Bluenose Chess Club were displayed and handed out to anyone who was interested in knowing where to find the club. At the end of the day, I believe everyone enjoyed the simul and the chance to play Nova Scotia's highest rated player.

I would again like to thank Ed Urquhart, on behalf of the Nova Scotia Chess Association, for helping us promote chess in the province and for putting on a very professional simul. I would also like to thank Chapter's Bookstore for allowing us to have a simul at their store and for providing the book prizes.

Bluenose vs. Eastern Kings Match
Report by Kim Tufts:

The Bluenose Club of Halifax welcomed the Eastern Kings of Wolfville to a match in February. Featuring accelerated time controls the games on all eight boards were hard fought though not error free affairs. The Bluenose Club avenged an earlier loss some time ago with a 5-3 decision. A rematch is in the works. Home field seems to be the determining factor so far.

Nova Scotia Closed

This year's Nova Scotia Closed was held on April 24-26 at St. Mary's University. Although this tournament had a number of last minute cancellations, a few unexpected "bye" requests and a "no show" from one player, the competitors enjoyed the high level of competition at this event. At the end, Glenn Charlton and Alvah Mayo finished tied for first, both having a "3.5" point score. Jim Mathers ended the tournament with a "3.0" points. Jason Kenney kindly agreed to play some rounds in the tournament when it was necessary to even out the field to prevent having any unnecessary "byes" handed out by the TD. I believe all the players enjoyed this weekend of chess. Thanks goes to Ed Urquhart for taking the time to organize this year's event.

Interestingly all the kids from grades 1-7 were first time winners for their grades. Unfortunately no one from grade nine showed up to compete. The winners of each grade were entitled to represent NS at the National finals being held in Winnipeg.

NS Blitz Championship

Date: 16 May 1998

The first NS Blitz Championship held in quite a few years was held at Dalhousie University on Saturday May 16. Although this event attracted a significant number of the higher rated players in the Maritimes, only 16 players showed up to participate and pay the $10 entry fee. The tournament was run as a double ten round swiss with players playing one game with each color against their opponent in every round.

At the end, Anthony Howarth and Ed Urquhart tied for first place as expected with 17.5 points. Howarth clobbered Urquhart in their individual encounter, with Ed managing to get a single draw. However, Ed battled back, mowing down the opposition while Howath later lost one game each to Fred McKim and then David Kenney. Jason Kenney, with 9.5 points, had a very good event, finishing higher than anyone else rated under 2000. Prizes went to Howarth and Urquhart for finishing tied for 1st -2nd ,U2000 prizes went to Jim Brennan and David Kenney, and the U1800 to Jason Kenney. Many thanks to the PEI contingent for making this a very strong blitz event.
