Alvah Mayo has agreed to take over the Nova Scotia Chess Newsletter
Editor duties from Dave Kenney. I'm sure I speak for everybody when I say
that Dave's efforts in this capacity as well as his service as NSCA
Secretary-Treasurer and perennial chess organizer are greatly appreciated.
As always, I am interested in submissions, annotated games, articles,
tournament reports, etc for inclusion in future issues of the
newsletter.

of the meeting.
Steve Saunders, Chairman of the NSCA opened the meeting and welcomed
everyone present at the AGM. Steve outlined the following agenda and
explained the primary purpose of the meeting:
- Introduction
- Treasurer's Report
- Election of Directors of the Nova Scotia Chess Association
- Questions from the Floor
- Adjournment
Introduction
Steve Saunders explained that the Nova Scotia Chess Association is
incorporated as a Society under the Societies Act of the Province of Nova
Scotia. Under the terms of incorporation, the NSCA is required to hold an
annual general meeting for the purpose of electing directors for the
ensuing year and consideration of the financial statements.

David Kenney also mentioned that in addition to the above noted
financisl position the NSCA is owed an estimated $200 by the Chess
Federation of Canada for the rebate of the provincial dues collected by
the CFC. This money would normally have been included during this period,
but the CFC was late in sending the money to the NSCA, apparently due to a
mix up on our mailing address. David Kenney also mentioned that the CFC
was aware of the problem and steps had been taken to correct the situation
and to have the funds resent to the NSCA.
Albert Ede presented a motion that the Treasurer's report be accepted
which was seconded by Dave Poirier. The motion passed.
Election of Directors of the Nova Scotia Chess Association
Steve Saunders explained that the NSCA is required to elect at least
five directors, but we could elect more if this was deemed to be
appropriate. The various officer positions of the NSCA together with the
two CFC Governors for NS will be selected from and by the new directors
elected this afternoon.
Steve then called for nominations for directors. The following
individuals were nominated and agreed to let their names stand for
election: Gilbert Bernard, Alvah Mayo, Steve Saunders, David Kenney,
Albert Ede, Kim Tufts and Michael Eldridge. Glenn Charlton was also
nominated but declined the nomination.
Since there were no further nominations Steve Saunders asked for a
motion to have all seven nominated individuals accepted as directors for
the current year. Motion was made by Bruce Fleury and seconded by Phil
Boyle. Dave Poirier asked why we were circumventing a formal election.
After a short discussion Steve then asked for a show of hands on whether
the members wished to proceed with an election or just accept all seven
nominated individuals.
The vote to accept all nominated individuals as directors. For: 30,
Against: 0, Abstain: 2. Motion was passed.
Questions from the Floor
Bruce Fleury asked a few questions regarding what the Directors
believed to be the biggest challenge and issues facing the NSCA. Steve
Saunders responded outlining some of the difficulties encountered last
year. In particular the situation regarding who was going to represent NS
at the Canadian Closed was a difficult issue and served to point out that
a new approach and stricter registration/deadline rules must be
established.
David Kenney also mentioned that he would like to see more chess
activity in the larger population centres outside of Halifax, such as
Sydney, Truro, New Glasgow and Yarmouth. David also mentioned that if
anyone was planning to start a chess club in another part of the province
where there currently is no chess activity, then the NSCA may be able to
supply some modest financial assistance.
Adjournment
Steve Saunders put a motion forward to adjourn the Annual Meeting
which was accepted by everyone present.
Meeting adjourned at approximately 11:15 am.

This 26 player event took place February 25-27 at the Dal SUB with
Justin Gulati of PEI and Ilias Baiguildine of Halifax tied for first place
with 4/5. Justin defeated Ilias in their individual encounter when Ilias
overlooked a tactic in a pawn up position and lost a piece. Justin
proceeded to lose with white against Alvah Mayo in the next round to give
Alvah the lead going into the last round. However, Alvah missed an unusual
tactic in the last round against Baiguildine to finish a half point out of
first.

the critical position of the entire game. My main alternative was to take

being mated after 17...Bxh6 18.Qxh6 Rxc2 by some combination of Bf3 and
g4-g5 and/or e4-e5 opening the fourth rank for the a4 rook. Also, Justin

After an absence of two and a half years the Halifax Open was held
March 24-26. Ilias Baiguildine buzzed through the field scoring a perfect
5/5 to win clear first by a point and a half over his nearest rivals. The
logjam at second place with 3.5 included Alvah Mayo, Jonathan MacDonald,
Steve Saunders and Mike Eldridge. This was the first time that Cole
Harbour Place was used as a playing site and the players were duly
impressed with this location.
Saunders-Mayo
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.d5 Ne4!? (The Vulture. Black violates classical opening
principles by moving the same piece twice in the opening before developing
any other pieces but this move does have point in that it prevents a
normal development scheme by White with Nc3, e2-e4 etc. I played it here
because I wanted to avoid the usual KID I usually get against Steve) 4.Qc2
Qa5+ 5.Nd2 f5 6.f3 Nd6 7.b3 e6 (the idea behind Steve's last is usually to
prevent g6 Bg7 by Black as well as protecting the c4 point. I respond by
putting more pressure on Steve's big center) 8.e4 fxe4 9.fxe4 e5 (Playing
to block the center and play against the partially compromised white
queenside) 10.Be2 Be7 11.Bb2 Nf7 12.Bg4 O-O (With a central pawn structure
like that of an Old Indian Steve plays Bg4 with the idea of trading light
squared bishops after I push d6, thus getting rid of his bad bishop.
Obviously I don't want that to happen) 13.Bc3 Qd8
14.O-O-O Nh6 15.Be2 d6 (I was expecting 15.Bh3 but maybe Steve
didn't want to worry about 15..g5 intending g4 and gaining
space. After 15.Be2 I take the opportunity to move my d pawn
without allowing the bishop trade) 16.h3 Bg5 (played to either
trade off my bad bishop or to activate it outside my pawn
chain) 17.Ngf3 Be3 18.Rdf1 Nf7 19.Qd3 Bd4 20.Nh2 Nbd7 (Move 20
is long enough to go with a completely undeveloped queenside)
21.Bxd4?? exd4 (Steve's last move is a blunder. Presumably he
wants to free up his queen from guard duty and play for Qg3
with kingside attacking ideas but this cure is far worse than
the disease. Now I get an advanced protected passed pawn, a
dream square for both my knights and a handy entry point for my
queen at c3) 22.Qg3 Nde5 23.Ndf3 Qa5 24.Nxe5 Nxe5 25.Rxf8+ Kxf8
26.Rf1+ Kg8 27.Ng4 Bxg4 (keeping my permanent knight on e5
where it both attacks and defends is more important than a
bishop on e6) 28.Bxg4 Qxa2 29.Be6+ Kh8 30.Rf5 Qa1+ 31.Kd2 Qb2+
32.Ke1 Qb1+ 33.Kf2 Nd3+ 34.Kf3 Qd1# 0-1

With the top half dozen Nova Scotia players duking it out in the
Closed the race for first place was wide open. Tournament favourite Justin
Gulati of PEI looked to be in command after beating Mike Eldridge in the
sixth round. However, in the last two rounds Justin faltered while Mike
finished off with two wins including a last round victory over Dave
Kenney. Second place was shared by Dave Poirier and Jason Kenney. Other
prize winners included Bruce Fleury and Jim Gilks (top Under 1900), Alex
Nuschke, Jarrett Gabriel and Garrett Keddy (top Under 1700), and Gary
Joudrey and David Spencer (Under 1500 prizes). Notable performances were
turned in by Phil Boyle and David Spencer who each gained 84 rating points
in this tournament. Below is the critical last round win that gave Mike
Eldridge the tournament victory.

1.Nf3 g6 2.d4 Bg7 3.c4 Nf6 4.Nc3 d6 5.e4 O-O 6.Be2 e5 7.d5 c6?! (as a long
time devotee of the King's Indian Defence this move appears to be
inaccurate. In the Petrosian system we have here the usual plan is a5,
Nb8-a6-c5, f5 and go for kingside play. The move 7...c6 is almost never
seen here because it does nothing to further the aforementioned Black plan
and in fact if Black ever takes cxd5 then the opening of the c file
favours White) 8.h3 Na6 9.Be3 Bd7 10.O-O Ne8 11.Bg5 f6 12.Bh4 Qe7 (with

possible) 13.a3 c5 14.Rb1 g5 15.Bg3 f5 16.exf5 Bxf5 (now the battle rages
over the e4 and f5 squares with White generally getting the former and
Black having the latter. In this position it will not be easy for Black to
get either knight to f5 so he can go for Nf5-d4) 17.Bd3 Nac7 18.Bxf5 Rxf5

knight on the e4 square and secured it with his f pawn making
sure that Dave never gets to play e4. Meanwhile Dave doesn't
have any pieces making use of his f5 square and his dark
squared bishop is quite bad) 25.b4 b6 26.Rf2 Ne8 27.Ra2 Nf6

Ed Urquhart has been one of Nova Scotia's elite players for years but
had yet to add a Nova Scotia Championship to his resume - until now. After
getting mugged at knifepoint two days before the tournament Ed was
understandably shaken and started slow, letting a big advantage against
Steve Saunders in the first round peter out to a draw followed by a quick
draw in the second round against Alvah Mayo. After that it was vintage Ed
as he turned on the afterburners and reeled off three straight wins to win
the Nova Scotia Closed and first dibs on Nova Scotia's spot in the
Canadian Closed. Sharing second place were NM Glenn Charlton and Alvah
Mayo with 3.5/5. This is one of the few events which uses non sudden death
time controls and I think it showed in the quality of some of the
endgames. We should have a complete collection of the games from the NS
Closed in the next newsletter.
